Waterfront Opening Alterations
Finzels Reach
As part of a massive rejuvenation programme along Weston Super Mare’s sea front.
The requirements
Finzels Reach, located in the heart of Bristol, has a long and varied history dating back to 1681.
Most recently occupied as a brewery until 1999, the site underwent a major redevelopment in 2017, which required alterations to an existing waterfront opening.
The project involved enlarging the opening by lowering the bottom steel beam below ground level to create a new flush opening. With limited ground-bearing capacity across the site, the only suitable foundations available were two pile caps originally installed for the proposed Castle Bridge.
A late design change relocated the bridge further into the development, leaving the piles and pile caps redundant. As a result, the temporary works design was constrained to providing support to the top steel at only two locations.
Our solution
A full 3D analysis of a cantilever RMD Superslim frame, supporting a total load of 500kN, was undertaken using CADS A3D Max and independently checked. Additional analysis was carried out on the existing beam to assess anticipated deflection and minimise the risk of cracking within the masonry.
The RMD Superslim solution provided the required clearance for the demolition works while allowing the existing lower steel to be retained and reused. Installation was completed with minimal manual handling through the use of mechanical hoists and cherry pickers, improving both efficiency and safety on site.
