The requirements

To create Apple’s renowned open-plan, minimalist environment within its new flagship store, specialist heavy-duty propping was required to facilitate the removal of key load-bearing walls.

The project presented several challenges, including preserving existing columns while installing new steelwork beneath them, as well as working within low allowable ground-bearing pressures. The primary engineering challenge was the temporary support of an existing column carrying an axial load of 1,500kN.

Our solution

TRS Group designed a heavy-duty propping solution using an RMD Megashor system combined with a bespoke steel connection, enabling the 1,500kN column load to be safely transferred into the temporary works structure. This allowed demolition and permanent works to be carried out safely and efficiently.

Buildability was a key consideration throughout the design process. The modular nature of the Megashor system enabled installation in manageable sections, helping to reduce manual handling risks and improve site efficiency.

To ensure compliance with the site’s allowable ground-bearing pressures, a temporary steel beam grillage was incorporated to distribute loads evenly across the existing ground.

The solution was delivered safely, on programme and within budget, forming a critical part of the principal contractor’s successful delivery of the project.
